Fair share fees, recently provided for by California state law, are 0.475% of gross monthly salary. Membership dues, on the other hand, are 0.5% of gross monthly salary. The difference between paying fair share fees versus being a member amounts to less than $1.00 more per month (on average), and being a member enables you to vote on union issues, run for elected offices within the union, and participate more fully in the actions and decisions of your union.
